A Few of My Favorite (Baby and Kid) Things: Highchairs from Ikea

The GASELL and the ANTILOP from IKEA

These highchairs saved my life. Okay, maybe that is an exaggeration, but certainly they have done wonders toward preserving my sanity! First, let me just say that I have always had a "thing" against highchairs. It's a strange item to have a "thing" against, I know, but I have always felt that there are are so many pieces of kid equipment for me to spend money on and that take up my home, I just wanted to preserve my kitchen a bit. So, for our first child we got by with one of those 3 position, strap it to the chair deals; first with the tray on, and then later with the tray removed when she was old enough to pull up to the table. It worked well enough, but its age began to show quickly and I began to tire of unstrapping it from the chair to clean up the milk/yogurt/corn/pasta concoctions that made their way underneath it and onto my kitchen chair! I had heard people who have the Ikea Antilop rave about it and once my little guy was old enough to need a place to eat his puffs and spit rice cereal at me, I decided to give it a shot-- Little did I know how fabulously affordable and life-changing this highchair would be! There are no tiny crevices to pick food out of, no weird cushion thing that needs to be washed everyday, and my kitchen chairs are free again! Like much of the Ikea furniture the design is sleek and relatively unobtrusive in our small kitchen. Imagine my delight when I found that Ikea had a new toddler-version of this dreamy seat- The Gasell! With the same sleek style, easy to clean surface and sturdy feel as its younger brother, the Antilop, this chair allows my 2.5 year old to at just the right height at the table without feeling like she is strapped into a baby seat (and believe me, that is a big deal these days!) Plus, oddly have two matching, white plastic things in our kitchen somehow makes them fit in better!
Priced at just $19.99 for the Antilop highchair (plus $5 for the tray) and $39 for the Gasell toddler seat, I would recommend them both as two of the most functional and best values in kids stuff!

The Gasell is EXACTLY what we need here. Nadia just is too wiggly when forced to sit in the grown-up chairs, and I really don't want an ugly booster seat. Thanks for the awesome post! We'll be ordering one today! (Easier than fighting the IKEA crowds and Chicago traffic!)

OK. So, I'm bummed because you can't buy the Gasell online yet. It looks like we'll be headed to IKEA this week. Should be fun times with two kids in tow.

Made the trip this weekend. Nadia loves the chair and it is SO much better than watching her do acrobatics in the big people chairs. Thanks Melissa!
