The Science Museum of Minnesota is hosting the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination Exhibit. My husband and I went to both the exhibit and the accompanying Omnitheater Show. This temporary, traveling show has been extended through August 27, 2008! We highly recommend the attraction for families- it will entertain the adults and children alike.
We first saw the Omnitheater show. It was not just about Star Wars, but about the evolution of special effects in movies over time. Any Star Wars fan knows that George Lucas and ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) have catapulted special effects forward more than any other. I suggest seeing this movie prior to the Star Wars show as it will deepen your understanding of the objects you will see. It runs just shy of an hour- and for those who may get a bit motion-sick from the Omni experience (am I talking about myself... sure am!), it is not too much motion, I handled it just fine.
The museum staggers entrances to the exhibit at fifteen minute intervals, but you can stay inside the exhibit for as long as you like. We went in, looked at everything and then doubled back to look again. The Star Wars artifacts run from models of ships and props to costumes to Luke Skywalker’s actual Land Cruiser. For the kids, there are science projects to create while passing through the show. We did not take part as these are directed at the children and we didn’t want to keep any kids from learning and having fun. The kids can create a hovercraft of Legos (like Luke Skywalker’s) and other activities. Surprisingly, cameras are allowed in the exhibit, so if you want a picture of yourself or child with Darth Vader or Chewbacca, you can take one (they are in enclosed displays).
We saw children of all ages at this show, but I would say if your child is interested in Star Wars, then that is the right age to take them- you will all love it!
So, if you are in the area or can be in the area, this is something worth seeing before it is gone!

We really, really wanted to see this while it was in Chicago, but never made it to the Museum of Science and Industry. Joe would have loved it!
Like I said... it's great for kids- and that includes husbands who will never outgrow Star Wars!
