Review and Giveaway! - SoMi Baby Sleepsacks

As winter quickly (too quickly!) approaches, I'm sure that many parents out there are wondering how in the world they are going to keep their babies warm at night. Infants are supposed to sleep without any blankets in their crib at all to prevent against SIDS and if your older baby is anything like my Isaac, he moves around so much at night that keeping a blanket on him would be impossible anyway. But, these babies still need something to cover them as the nights turn colder and colder and colder... This is where SoMi Baby Sleepsacks come in. There are many sleepsack choices on the market these days, but none as beautiful as the ones made by SoMi Baby!

Finding out that Isaac liked sleeping in a sleepsack is almost the most wonderful discovery that I have ever made. After months of frequent nighttime wakings, we zipped him up in a sleepsack and he started sleeping soundly through the night. I can't believe how much our family life was able to change thanks to sleepsacks. Our first sack was pretty lightweight making it great for the summer, but now that the cooler nights of fall have set in, we need something a little more substantial. I stumbled upon the gorgeous Sleepsacks by SoMi Baby and was thrilled when they offered to send me one to try out. Isaac has been sleeping in the gorgeous (did I say gorgeous again?) dual print Lily/Tranquility Sleepsack. The pictures speak about how beautiful these Sleepsacks are, but once you experience them in person, you will truly understand the quality of construction as well.

Each sack has a durable, but quiet zipper that runs along one side and about halfway across the bottom. I appreciate that the zipper allows the Sleepsack to open far enough that I can easily put Isaac in it. I usually make sure it's open flat before I feed Isaac for the last time in the evening. Sometimes he falls asleep, and it's so much easier to get him into the Sleepsack if it's already open. The zipper also works in the other direction which means that it unzips from the bottom up, too. This makes it so simple to do a middle of the night diaper change without taking your baby completely out of the Sleepsack. The snaps at the shoulders are very easy to snap. I don't ever struggle around with trying to match the sides up, if that makes sense. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I come across snaps that are impossible to get snapped, but I've never struggled with the fun star snaps on the SoMi Baby Sleepsack. While they are easy to get snapped, they are also strong enough to stay connected no matter how much Isaac tosses and turns, but I can also easily get them unsnapped with one had in the morning. I can't wait to get my hands on my smiling happy Isaac first thing in the morning, and it's nice to be able to easily get him out of his snugly warm Sleepsack. (Maybe a little bit of an exaggeration because most mornings I wish he'd stay asleep, but once I've made my say to his room I can't resist his handsome gummy smile!)

The SoMi Baby Sleepsacks are made out of luxuriously soft 100% cotton and all-natural (and SAFE) fire-retardant batting. I mentioned that I was looking for a sleepsack that was a little more substantial for the winter, and the SoMi Baby Sleepsack fits that bill perfectly. The batting provides that little bit of extra warmth Isaac will need as it gets colder and colder in Chicago-land. Even if your city doesn't get as cold as ours, I still think you'll appreciate the extra coziness that these Sleepsacks will provide. You have three different choices in size. Size 1 is 0-9 months, or up to 25 inches. Size 2 is 9-23 months or up to 34 inches and then finally, Size 3 is 24 months+ up to 40 inches. The best feature of all is that the SoMi Baby Sleepsacks come with an adjustable tie at the bottom. Isaac is sleeping in a size 2 and while it's way too long, we just simply tie up the bottom and he doesn't get all tangled up at night. What a great innovation!

In addition to the beautiful and incredibly functional Sleepsacks, SoMi Baby also makes blankets, bibs and the most adorable booties as well. The blankets feature the same gorgeous cotton prints on one side and luxuriously soft minky on the other and are available in two sizes: 22 x 22 inches and 34 x 34 inches. The smaller would make the perfect "lovie" while the larger the perfect blanket for your toddler to curl up under while reading books on the couch. The reversible bibs also have a layer of batting to help absorb messes. Isaac has a bib to match his Sleepsack, and while he's a really messy little eater, his clothes have stayed clean! The velcro on the bibs works great, and the neck is big enough for even my chubby little man! Finally, the kimono style baby booties which I adore are made with the same cotton uppers, soft sherpa soles and a velcro closure. I wish that Isaac had been small enough for us to try a pair of the booties out! Right now, they are only available in size 0-3 months.

When I first discovered SoMi Baby, their website didn't include very many store locations because they are a brand-spankin' new company. Just a short month later, they are now available at three different online stores and several other brick and mortar stores including Elephant Ears in the Kerrytown Shopping area in Ann Arbor, MI! The fabrics are gorgeous and feel so luxurious, and yet the Sleepsacks are still incredibly functional. Style and function don't always go hand in hand, but in the case of the SoMi Baby Sleepsacks, they are one and the same!

Functionality **** - Don't be fooled by the beautiful exterior. The SoMi Baby Sleepsacks are not just for looks. The quiet "two-way" zipper makes middle-of-the-night diaper changes as painless as possible and also getting a sleeping baby into bed a breeze. The snaps are strong without being ridiculously hard to open. Most impressively, the all-natural cotton batting is fire resistant, but also SAFE for your baby.

Style **** - Each fabric choice is prettier than the next, and with the exception of one pink fabric, all the prints are very gender neutral as well. These Sleepsacks would make a great gift for those parents who, like Alexandra's sister, are finding out the "old-fashioned" way the gender of their new baby!

Price **1/2 - At around $100, the SoMi Baby Sleepsacks aren't cheap. However, you're getting a Sleepsack made from the highest quality, all-natural materials. Two redeeming factors are: 1) The fact that the Sleepsacks come in mostly gender-neutral fabrics means you can pass them down to younger siblings and 2) The adjustable ties mean that you will be able to use the Sleepsack for a long time. Isaac is sleeping in the Size 2 right now, and while he's only 7 months old now, I don't imagine that we'll ever have to buy him another Sleepsack. He'll be able to sleep in his current one until he's almost 2 and ready to transition into a toddler bed.

Overall Rating ***1/2 - Designed by two women who are also moms, the SoMi Baby Sleepsacks are a beautiful and functional answer to the question, "How am I going to be able to keep my baby warm this winter?" Or, in our case, "How in the world can I get my baby to sleep through the night?" Again, moms just always seem to get it right!
