Review and Giveaway: Boon Saucer (Stay-put divided plate)

Boon is new to me; I’d heard of it, but never tried any of their items. I know now that that is ridiculous, but the Boon Saucer is my first foray into the land of Boon. I had both kids use our plate and they both liked it. My Hub and I both liked it. I have to say though, that it does not “stay put”. It’s difficult to move, yes, but both kids (6 months and 2.5 years) were able to pick it up. The Boon website description is more true: “slip resistant” and “unique edgeless plate design helps prevent little hands from lifting it off the table”. These are true, but “stay-put” is a misnomer.

This plate is a very good idea. It is almost built backwards; the plate is flat at the bottom (with a rubber trim) and rounded up. This makes the plate essentially edgeless. There are three sections for food, each a different size. Since Adam is too little for finger food yet, and Anastasia loves eating from her divided plate, we had Anastasia give it a go. The Boon Saucer is 7 inches in diameter. This is much smaller than a standard dinner plate. It is marketed for 9 months plus, and I definitely think it is for younger children due to the size. It is, however, the perfect size for snacks for bigger kids.

Anastasia loved it and Adam loved chewing on it. I do look forward to Adam getting good use of this plate. It’s a perfect size, separates food apart, and it is hard to make the plate slide around. I think this plate will best serve its slip-resistant purpose when Adam is bigger and bumps it or is distracted and pushes it with his arm. The rubberized edging should minimize spills.

As an important aside, Boon gives 10% of its sales to charities that benefit children. Isn't that nice?

Following is my review, each of four stars:

Functionality *** and a half: As long as we call a spade a spade: that this plate is slip-resistant and not stay-put, the plate is as advertised. I, and my daughter, like the divided sections. I look forward to the hope of less mess in a few months when Adam starts eating real food. Dishwasher safe. The plate is BpA-free, Phthalate-free and PVC-free for those of you who keep tabs on that sort of thing.

Cost ****: $5.99 a plate. So reasonable.

Style ****: Boon products are modern looking but not weird looking. I like the unique twist on something as simple as a plate. The colored rubber strip is a perfect amount of snazz (yes, I said “snazz”).

Overall Rating ****: I’m going for it, 4 stars! Just know that it’s not stay-put. It’s not cemented to your table after all. Cool looking, useful, and inexpensive.
