Hey all, this tip is something I have been doing since Dozer was born. Handmade cards, I am sure a ton of people do this to some extent, but now with the economy not shall we say looking up, I think it is something more of us should do. I purchased plain card stock at Hobby Lobby in a bundle with the envelopes about three years ago and am only now needing to purchase a new bundle. So, in other words a ton come in a package and at Hobby Lobby, where I bought ours, you can always find a coupon in the newspaper or simply subscribe to their weekly e-mail which includes their weekly coupon. Typically it is 40% off one item and I am pretty sure Michael's does the same thing if that is your crafty store of choice.

By purchasing a bundle you always have the needed supplies on hand because you can use absolutely anything to embellish the card. I even have a few extra pre-decorated for those times I need a card for an almost forgotten birthday or a get well card to Granny. In this way I take advantage of the time the kids are feeling crafty and do not have just another piece of paper with crayons, markers, paints, or glued objects all over it. It is on a nice card stock that has an envelope just waiting for it to be put in and mailed off.
This year to save money and not just donate to the pile of nice, but not really useful gifts that all teachers receive I had them make cards. I slipped wallet sized pictures of them doing something that depicts their personalities in with the card. It think it was a thoughtful gift that costs pennies and as a past teacher would have liked to have and would be much easier to keep as a memento.
So, go do it, get the card stock. I think it shows more intent to give a handmade card with a nice envelope versus a folded up piece of paper in a business envelope. Also I think the cards are cherished in a completely different way than the typical art work that we send out to relatives. I know that the family and friends we have given the cards to have always talked about how neat it is to receive them and how they display them more.

I'm a big fan of homemade cards. The best is that now Nadia "writes" the message, too. We translate it word for word, and the stuff she comes up with is pretty funny. Usually the sentiment is there, but the wording is a little off. Very cute.
