Today, I'm super excited to introduce you to a site that I wish I had known about long ago, Parenting By Nature. While Parenting By Nature is a retail site specializing in baby carriers, cloth diapering supplies, and a large selection of other baby necessities, even more importantly, it's a site devoted to helping educate parents on two misunderstood and often confusing subjects, baby wearing and cloth diapering.
While I wouldn't necessarily call myself a "baby wearer," with the birth of my second child, it became incredibly obvious that I was going to need to practice the "art of baby wearing" a little more frequently if I was going to survive. With only two hands, there's just no possible way that I could manage both Isaac and Nadia without the use of a carrier. I've used several different carriers over the past year, but never really found a carrier that was both perfect for when he was small, but that I feel I could still be using now that he's older. I knew what I wanted in a carrier, but didn't know how to go about finding the right one. If I had know about Parenting By Nature, I think that I would have found the perfect carrier a lot sooner without having to go through the whole trial and error process.
Click on Read More! below to find out more about Parenting By Nature and to learn how you can win my new favorite carrier, the Piccolo Baby Carrier!
As a resource for parents who want and or NEED to learn more about baby wearing, Parenting By Nature should be your first stop. If you scroll down to the bottom of the home page, there is a section called Baby Carriers 101. You'll find just about everything you need to know about the different types of carriers such as: the history and advantages of baby wearing, pros and cons of each type of baby carrier, tips on choosing the style of carrier that is right for you, and hints and tricks to insure that your baby wearing experience is a positive one. I've never seen a site as comprehensive and as detailed. Defining the pros and cons of each carrier is so helpful, especially if you've never used a baby carrier before.
Over the past three years, I've used a wrap-style carrier, tube slings, a structured carrier as well as the Baby K'tan which is sort of a hybrid of a bunch of different kinds of slings. When I went to the Parenting By Nature site for the first time, I felt like I knew what I was looking for in a baby carrier, but didn't know if it existed. I'm not confident in my wrapping abilities, I've found tube slings to be too limiting because I can only use one of my arms, and anyone who has owned a Baby B'jorn before knows it's limitations. I knew I needed the "security" that I feel when wearing a structured carrier, but I wanted one that would allow both my husband and myself to wear our children facing forward, on our hips or on our backs, but I wanted one that was comfortable and supportive, too. Because I had such a clearly defined carrier in mind, with just one click, I found what I was looking for, the Pikkolo Carrier. Yes, it was really that easy. Thanks to a very organized site, all I had to do was click on soft pack carriers and a complete list of all the soft pack carriers that Parenting By Nature carriers popped up with a brief, yet specific description of each. It was so easy to find the carrier that I knew I wanted, and I haven't been disappointed. But, what if you've never tried out other carriers? With the excellent descriptions and the pros and cons of each carrier written out so clearly by Parenting By Nature, I think that with no previous experience, even a new parent will be able to find the carrier that will best fit her needs.
If you've worn carriers before and hated the experience, my advice is give it another try with the help of Parenting By Nature. Like I said, I didn't really consider myself a "baby wearer" before, but have found that wearing Isaac makes everything go so much more smoothly. Trips to Target are so much less painful, getting Nadia to and from the car to her classroom at school is much easier, and we couldn't have lived without Isaac in a carrier last summer. I wish I had had the right carrier back when he was small because I really think he would have benefited from being carried around more. Perhaps he might have been a little less grumpy. The secret, as Parenting By Nature knows, it is essential to not only have a quality carrier, but to make sure that you have the style of carrier that is going to make the experience enjoyable for you AND your little one.
Now for the review of the Pikkolo Baby Carrier, based on a 4-star scale:
Functionality *** - We are using the Pikkolo Baby Carrier mostly as a back carrier as Isaac is 13 months and 25 pounds. What I love about this carrier is that you can carry your child on your back, your hip, and tummy-to-tummy, but also forward-facing! Plus, it's good from 8 to 40 pounds! Yes, I know about the Ergo and that many of you love your Ergos, but facing out is not an option, and both of my children have insisted on being able to face out from the time that they could hold their little heads up. The straps are made out of memory foam which means they are super comfortable without being bulky. Unlike my Baby K'tan and tube slings, this carrier is adjustable meaning anyone can wear it, not just me. The Pikkolo Baby Carrier also comes with a detachable hood for protecting those delicate little baby heads, too. As a hip carrier, I've enjoyed the Pikkolo as well. We don't have a backyard, but do have a playground right next door, with the Pikkolo Carrier, I can easily just throw Isaac up on my hip and not lug him there in my arms! It is recommended that you wear the carrier up high, around your rib cage. I will say from experience that the higher you wear it, the more comfortable you will be both while wearing it and the next morning. I wore Isaac a little lower yesterday, as you can see in the pics, and I definitely felt him a lot more than I did last week when he was sitting up higher, and my back was killing me this morning. I don't blame the carrier as much as I do my own user error.
My only dislike of the Pikkolo carrier is that I do have to crisscross the straps in front of me when I wear Isaac on my back which squishes my chest a little. Luckily, I'm small-busted, but it might make the carrier a little uncomfortable for some, and probably impossible to wear as a nursing mother. It's not essential that you crisscross the straps, but my shoulders are pretty narrow, and I found that when they weren't crossed, I felt like I was struggling to keep the carrier from slipping off when I wore him on my back. However, with the straps crossed and the carrier up higher around my waist, I'm perfectly comfortable. Melissa gave it a go at the zoo with her little guy facing in last week, and found it to be more comfortable than she was expecting as well. Bear with the instruction manual. It's complete, but mine had some pages out of order making it a little confusing! There's a bit of a learning curve if you've never worn a back carrier before, but it is not nearly as steep as learning to use a wrap-style carrier, and once you figure a system out, it's a piece of cake.
Style **** - The Pikkolo Baby Carrier comes in several very pretty prints and a handful of solids, including black and sand. Much prettier than other carriers I've owned!
Price *** - $150 CAD on the Parenting By Nature site, but around the $130 mark at stores here in the States, the Pikkolo is one of the more expensive carriers. However, you get a lot of versatility for this price. We spent nearly $100 on our Baby Bjorn carrier and it doesn't provide nearly as much versatility, style or most importantly comfort.
Overall Rating *** - I do love this carrier! Isaac loves riding on my back much more than I thought he would, and IF there's a baby number 3, you can guess given his genes, that he'll love riding around facing the world. I know that it might seem a little expensive, but all baby carriers are pricey, and if you want a good one that you're going to enjoy wearing, you're going to have to spend the money, but speaking from experience, you'll be glad that you did!

I learned that they have been mentioned in the new book Ecoholic, Your Guide to the Most Environmentally Friendly Information, Products and Services in Canada (Spring 2007).
What a great giveaway! I would love to be able to carry my daughter, who at 9mos is already close to 30lbs and almost 30" tall. We've tried wraps and slings without success, and this sounds perfect for us.
Here is what I learned about Parenting By Nature, "The majority of our products are mommy or daddy invented and/or created and are not found in mainstream stores."
I really like the fact that they have more unique choices, and I am contemplating purchasing this http://www.parentingbynature.com/004-tres-tria-bolster.htm for my next pregnancy!

Need good one with baby due in June!
Dang, I sooo wish I knew about this before I got the Ergo for #2. She, like Olivia insists on facing front and we're approaching the end of my ability to continue with the Bjorn. I may have to see if I can get some money for the Ergo that's never been used to get this!
I really want to try the Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Training Pants
pinkveganmiso(at)yahoo(dot)com
I would really like to have the carrier in Cloud/Chocolate. Oooh, and the Chutes BabyLegs!
katiekarr at gmail dot com
I love the concept of babywearing. I checked out their carriers, and my favorite has to be the Cafe au Lait/Chocolate -- mostly because it's gender neutral enough so my husband could wear it too!
jlmk223(at)yahoo(dot)com
I'd like to try the BumGenius ORGANIC One-Size All-in-One because I keep hearing about how great cloth diapers are and I have never used them. Plus I like that it's organic!
I learned that there are actually wool cloth diapers. Apparently wool is soft, breathable, and can hold 30% of its weight in liquid. Sounds scratchy to me, but I am intrigued!
jgilger at gmail
I really like the Luxury Organic Baby Blanket.
Thanks for the giveaway!
hetz-junk(at)hotmail(dot)com
I learned that there is no perfect baby carrier. "Each style of baby carrier has its advantages and disadvantages and unfortunately no one carrier is complete in serving all purposes perfectly. A parent must consider their own needs and then select a baby carrier that meets these needs the best. Try not to get too hung up on finding the “perfect baby carrier”. It’s been said that there are as many ways to wear a baby as there are ways to make a baby smile. Relax and enjoy this time with your baby. The benefits of wearing your baby close will last a lifetime."
That's why I'm a babywearer who is learning every day!
The majority of our products are mommy or daddy invented and/or created and are not found in mainstream stores
I'd love to get the fitted cloth diapers.
meredycat*lycos*com
I learned that there are several different types of cloth diapers - flat, prefolded, contour, fitted, pocket. Great website!
I love their registry system
I did not know that they have baby registry. My sis in law is expecting, so I sure am going to suggest this to her. Thanks for introducing me to this website.

I learned how easy cloth diapering can be - we are really considering trying it out!
I'd like to try the Earth Mama Angel Baby, A Little Something For New Mama. Thanks!
I love the Ergo sucking pads. What a brilliant idea!!
While babywearing, your baby is within easy kissing and cuddling distance and carried babies cry 43% less overall!
I'd like to try some babylegs for my potty-training 2-year old. Now that it's warmer, we're thinking less clothes will help him make that final leap!
I loved the section that gave the advantages and disadvantages of different baby carriers. I'm expecting my first baby in 8 weeks and really want something versatile that my husband and I can both use. I really want to use the Pikkolo carrier since it's so versatile. I think it'll make outings much much easier!
thank you for the chance
The information on cloth diapering -- especially the savings they mention -- are really wanting me to convert. The one thing holding me back is the lack of laundry machines!
I'd like to try the TruKid Non-Toxic Sunscreen
gkstratos@yahoo.com
I'd like to try Earth Mama Angel Baby Diaper Rash Soap.
I LOVE their wooden toys espcially the Haba Toys Flapsi....it's so Cute!
i'm expecting my 3rd child in late fall, so i investigated the cloth diapering option, and was pleased to see that it can be both affordable and convenient! i wish the site also listed USA dollar amounts, as it's difficult to understand the cost in Canadian.
I like the Baby Feeding Sets.
I love the Beco. It is a beautiful version of the Ergo. What a great giveaway this one is!!
I'd actually love to try the Scootababy Hip Carrier. Thank you for hosting such a great giveaway!
The Ergo Sucking pads are great! Thanks for the chance.
mogrill@comcast.net
This is an amazing giveaway opportunity for a baby carrier that looks and sounds ideal! My four month old would get months of use out of this and that would be a great thing, because she has decided that she wants... no, needs to be held 24/7. I love our special snuggle time, but this carrier would help free up my hands and the pressure on my back and shoulders would ease with the support provided by this carrier.
I loved checking out the website offered by Parenting By Nature. They offer so many amazing products that you can feel good about using! My favorite? I am really digging the Ergo Sucking Pads! You know that babies are going to suck on whatever they can get their mouths on and these pads are reversible, 100% cotton terry and attach with Velcro. How easy is that?!? Awesome!
Thanks for the great giveaway and good luck to all!
i learned they have a registry (so nice!) and i'd love to try the organic luxary baby blanket

garyandalesha@cox.net
I would love to try the Imse Vimse Organic Cloth Training Pants on the little on I'll be potty training soon!
khmorgan_00 [at] yahoo [dot] com
Baby wearing has so many benefits. Baby's cry less, which is always good. You can prevent people from coming up to touch them when you are wearing them. I guess people are less likely to invade your personal space than touching them while they are in their carseats in a grocery cart.
Thanks for the grat giveaway!
yzgirl4[at]verizon[dot]net
I have always felt that babywearing would make your baby feel safe, secure and cozy, but I learned a few more reasons at Parenting By Nature web site, like: carried babies cry 43% less overall, and 54% less during the evening hours; you can attend to your other children and they will not feel neglected with a new baby around; you can go places that are difficult to access with strollers; your baby will be protected from curious strangers and their germs; and your baby will feel safe, secure and bonded to you in a way you can't imagine:) These are just a few of the benefits of wearing your baby :)

I'm a subscriber by email :)

I would like to get the Under The Nile Organic Cotton Monkey - its so cute, cuddly and soft looking. yyeres(at)gmail(dot)com
I learned that most orders are shipped within one business day! That's great! I hate waiting forever for something that I ordered to be shipped. Thanks for the great giveaway!
I've learned that there's another really great site out there to read up on the baby-wearing and cloth diapering! I'll be sharing this site with my SIL who's expecting and learned about using cloth diapers when she came for a visit. This site will be a great tool for 'converting' her!
Plus those Organic Teething Toys look like just what my son needs right now with his first chomper coming in.
Thanks also for the great review of the Pikkolo. I'm beginning to think that may be my next carrier purchase. I also noticed on the site that the fabrics on most carriers just keep getting prettier and prettier. (It's been a little while since I looked.) I love that so many are fashionable as well as functional.
I have been coveting the Blue Celery Baby Sling/Wrap Hybrid. I hear you about pain the next morning. I use a traditional ring sling with my 20 lb son and if I am not careful, my shoulders or back will kill me the next day. Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com
I didn't realize that cloth diapers were made with sherpa and hemp. They sound like a good alternative to disposable diapers. The carriers on this site look great, I'm interested in the Pikkolo and the Ergo. Thanks.
The Snappi diaper fasteners seem awesome for cloth diapers ~ no more pins. Also they have a great section explaining cloth diapers, how to use them, how to wash them, and freq. asked questions about them.
I learned all about the different types of baby carrying. Which is nice because My husband and I would both really like to carry our baby. This way we can look at how they work and the advantages and disadvantages before we buy something we are not going to love. Thanks!
janea.gray@usd480.net
I've learned that I should have started baby gear shopping just out of girlhood! There are a million choices out there for every little aspect of baby's growth.
We will know by June if our newborn will be allergic to everything like her uncle and papa. It will be a real learning curve with cloth and formula if we have to go that route.
As we have wood floors I will definitely be getting some Babylegs Baby Legwarmers.
I learned that there is a study to show that carried babies cry less-43% less. Something that I figured was the case, but I like the proof.
I learned that changing cloth diapers is almost identical to changing disposable diapers. They aren't any more gross, or disgusting.I would love a pair of ORGANIC Brite BabyLegs. Thanks for the chance to win!
I just love their FAQs and found this one very interesting: "Do I have to touch dirty diapers?" They explain that it's much the same as when using disposables. If you're breastfeeding, solids are water-soluble and will wash out in your washing machine. If not breastfeeding, there's new invention called the Mini Shower Diaper Sprayer that lets you spray your soiled diapers right into the toilet.
I found a ton of info on baby wearing and cloth diapers. I will be going back for more reading as I start shopping for baby on the way. Great site and great products, thanks for sharing!
Love the baby carrier.
I like the Peekaru Fleece Baby Carrier Vests. Need something like that in the colder climes. Thanks for a great giveaway!
I'd love to try the Moby Wrap Baby Carrier
I really like the Hooter Hiders Nursing Covers!
jnkrim (at) qwestoffice (dot) net
This carrier looks great! Parenting by nature has lots of great info about cloth diapering. I learned that you shouldn't dunk dirty diapers in the toilet, instead there is a diaper spray they recommend. I had no clue- i've always done the dunking, ooops.
Anyway there is a bunch more info too and i've bookmarked it for future research.
Thanks a bunch
I'd like to try any of the Haba Toys,

I would like to try pretty much all of the products Parenting By Nature offers! However, because I have two girls I think the BabyLegs would come in handy so that I could put them on when it's a little cooler in the morning but then easily pull them off as it warms up later in the day. My favorites are the Wellesly and the Blue Dots patterns.
Thanks!

Thanks for your review of the Pikkolo baby carrier. I'm considering buying one, and I love hearing that it works for your small stature. When I looked at the Parenting by Nature website, I saw the parent wearing the baby forward and that sealed it. It's the carrier I want!
I'd love the try the pikkolo actually! I'm in the market for one and googled pikkolo and found your site! :)
