Review and Discount: AMA Handbook of First Aid and Emergency Care

This book is coming with me on my vacation in a few weeks. And probably every other vacation I take with my kids. AMA Handbook of First Aid and Emergency Care is a light paperback book filled with all sorts of medical care guidance and instruction. This ranges from ticks and slivers to the Heimlich and splinting collarbones and CPR. With some of the items this book covers, I’d just throw up my arms and call 911, but if you want to birth a baby, that’s in here too.

I’ve been tied to my Baby 411 book since Anastasia arrived; she’s long outgrown it, and once Adam kicks the bottle, we’re pretty much done. I’ve suppressed a slight panic about where I’ll find out what diseases and symptoms to look for (I’ve accurately diagnosed 5ths Disease on Facebook because of Baby 411) now that we are wrapping up the Baby stage. Problem solved. This Handbook covers all the biggies and is simple to read. It’s also not so inclusive that you can’t find what you are looking for- it’s under 400 pages and not two inches thick.

No matter where you are in the country, ocean to mountain top, you’ll find pertinent references; stings from sea creatures, vicious spiders, and plant afflictions- there is an explanation of how to deal with it.

For the scary bigger issues, broken bones and knocked-out teeth and unconsciousness, this book will not make you an MD, but will help you keep your head, and do your best by the poor soul you are helping, while waiting for the professionals to relieve you of duty. The Handbook also is clear on when you should call a doctor or 911.

My review is simple and positive.

Functionality: **** An un-textbook-like, easy-to-navigate guide of caring for and assisting others. Will help you diagnose conditions as well. Easily portable and light for travel. The text is large and well spaced out so it is not overwhelming to look at.

Price: ****- $16.95. Absolutely reasonable. Becomes more reasonable when you don’t have to cough up a doctor visit co-pay (I’d break even on the first skipped doctor visit).

Overall Score: ****- Frostbite to spider bites to truly serious medical problems like seizures, this book could help you. And I just like to be prepared and have a back up plan.
