Items that I have owned in my days of baby wearing include the following: Two brands of sized slings, one ring sling, an Ergo, two versions of the Baby Bjorn, a Scootababy, a Moby W
rap and a Kelty backpack. Suffice it to say, between jobs in child care centers, as a nanny and now with my own children, I have spent more than a few hours wearing a baby in some fashion, so I felt pretty prepared to do this review of the new, super cute and lightweight Kokopax Carrier!
I will admit to you upfront a bit of skepticism about the Kokopax, primarily because of its lack of waist strap, something that I firmly believed that any self-respecting framed backpack carrier should have and that even many soft sided, front/back carriers boast. I can also admit when I am wrong! And I was wrong about the necessity of a waist strap-- the Kokopax's unique design allows the weight of the baby to be shifted toward the legs (and therefore not pulling on your shoulders) through its adjustable lumbar support. It is well-made, comfortable and did I mention super cute?

Toy ring, great cover for storing it (shown on the left), little pocket on the back, the people at Kokopax have you covered in a number of ways! Along with all of these little conveniences, there is my favorite feature which is the weight of the Kokopax Carrier: 2.7lbs--That's it! (For comparison many of the other framed backpack carriers weigh around 7-8 lbs!) What this means is that in combination with its trim design it makes it possible for me to get it on and off by myself. Sure, I can do it with my other backpack, but it is very cumbersome and always seems a little unsafe. With the Kokopax carrier I can confidently get it on and off with no assistance. There are a couple
of pretty minor, function-related things that bug me, neither of which I would call deal-breakers- The first is that straps to keep baby safe and in place are a little awkward to work with and fasten. Once we did it a couple of times, both my husband and I got the hang of it, but it is not the easiest thing to do. The other issue, and like I said it is fairly minor, is that I am not able to get the stability bar popped out when the carrier is on my back (the stability bar is that thing that pops out which makes framed carriers able to stand on their own). What this means is that I have to do it after I have already removed the carrier (with baby inside) from my back- Not a huge deal, but could make for a precarious situation should the little guy decide to throw a fit in the middle of this process!
Style: **** Definitely four stars here! You simply will not find a more stylish framed carrier or one with cuter fabric choices! There are six different fabric to choose from- each darling, although some that my husband informed me he would not be wearing!
Price: The Kokopax carrier retails for $179, no matter where you buy it. It is so new that there are no deals out ther just yet....except the awesone one for KBP readers- see below! For an extra $20, you can have a hat for your little person that coordinates with your carrier. And for an extra $24 you can have Koko the monkey to attach to the carrier and a little Pax protector- both are made with soft, organic cotton.
Overall: Oh, how often we have to make the dreadful decision between fashion and comfort! Not so with Kokopax! The bottom line is, if you are hiking the Appalachian trail this is probably not the backpack for you. If you are chopping veggies, shopping, walking to the park, or just living your life and want the convenience of being hands free with baby close by, then it certainly might be!
