Review, Giveaway & Discount: SafteyTat Summer Quick Stick Write-Ons!

Ame reviewed SafetyTats awhile back and seemed quite a fan of this product. At that time, I didn’t give them much thought. Little did I know that was simply because my children were stationary and highly dependent on only me. This meant that there was almost no chance that either of my children could wander away from me. Until a few months ago, both Adam and Anastasia were securely tethered to their strollers and belted in.

Suddenly, I have Miss Independent-Almost-3-Year-Old with me. Anastasia wants to walk. Sure, she’ll hold my hand, but that does not mean she hasn’t, and it doesn’t mean she couldn’t bolt off without thinking (luckily this hasn’t happened yet). So, not to be a “head in the sand” kind of person, but the thought of losing my child terrifies me. My blood runs cold and I feel numb, terrified. So, I guess what I am trying to say is that I’ve tried not to think about what would happen, or what she and I should do, if this horror occurs.

So, I tried the SafteyTat Quick Stick Write-Ons. They are clear medical grade adhesive temporary tattoos. The packs come with a certain number of SafetyTats (in kid-friendly designs), alcohol wipes for clean application, and an amazingly indelible black pen. Application was easy; I chose Anastasia’s upper arm, I did a quick swab, a quick dry, then peeled the SafetyTat from its paper back and applied it to Anastasia’s arm. Then I wrote down my cell number.

A small sense of calm came over me. I had been worried that using a SafetyTat would be a parental license to let one’s child wander. Not so. It became an easy springboard for discussing “being lost” and what to do. Immediately Anastasia wanted to talk about her “band-aid”. We discussed how it wasn’t a band-aid, but that it had mommy’s telephone number on it. Just in case she looked up and couldn’t see mommy or daddy. Then we talked about what she should do if she didn’t see us. How abstract for a child who has never looked up and not seen a familiar face! Anastasia heard me explain to many inquisitive people that what she was wearing was not a band-aid, but a SafteyTat. After a day, she was able to say, herself, that it was a “Mommy’s Phone Number Sticker”. Good enough for me should, God forbid, someone actually need to call me.

Does this soothe me in any way over the fear of losing my child? Not at all. Does it make me feel better that hoping, betting the odds, a nice person finds my baby and helps her find me again because Anastasia has my phone number? Yes. It does.

My formal review is below, each category of four stars.

Functionality: ****- A two-second process to apply. Just make sure your child is still when you write your number. Simple, helpful and clear in telling a stranger how to find you. (Sorry no actual pictures, my real cell number was on the SafetyTat). Stays securely affixed and did not irritate Anastasia’s skin after 3 days of wearing it. Did not hurt to remove at all. Can be purchased pre-printed with your number or as a “Write-On”. I love the Write-On option, because sometimes you never know until you leave the house whose number you will want to list.

Materials and Durability: ****- Medical grade adhesive, stuck like crazy. We washed, dried, lotioned, sun-screened, played in, slept in, and played in the pool with the SafetyTat on. After three days, it was still on, and just starting to pull up on the edges and puckering a bit. The SafetyTat people say it could stay on longer than a week. I agree, but, aside from your number (which didn’t smudge or fade), wouldn’t be much to look at.

Price: ****- Depends on the package size, but for under a dollar a SafetyTat, it’s well worth the hope that someone nice finds your child and then helps your child find you.

Style: ****- Made to make kids want to wear them. Cute faces, dinosaurs, seasonal pictures. Also options for allergies and other medical conditions.

Overall Score:****- I am a 100% convert and advocate of this product. It does not give any personal information about you or your child, just a number to reach you. Just like it’s worth a dollar every now and then to dream to hit the lottery, it’s worth the small cost to help your child back to your arms if your worst fears come to pass.
